Simla! September 6. The Viceroy, Lord Chelmsford, in opening the. Legislative Council, out- . liiied too Government's proposals to eradicate Auatro-German influence in India, and to deal with the question ■ '.of after-war trade. Referring to. the question of supplying the Dominions with labour, the Government, be said, was trying to devise a proper system for the recruitment and proper treatment of Indian labour in the country of destination. Uncontrolled recruitment '.would not be allowed. The relations of India with Afghanistan and Persia were , cordial and harmonious. .The' loyalty of ■ . India was steady. ; India In the Field. During the wax, added the Viceroy, • India had supplied and kept up to ; strength largo forces ia France, East ■ Afrioa, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and:Murat. The Indian Army had proved a' great Imperial asset. Recruiting was excellent, ■ and the enlistments the r opening.of. the war had exceeded the v entire strength of tho Indian Army in • ■ August, 1914.
