LIGHT AND FEATHERWEIGHT DECISIONS

The greatest interest was taken iu the tiro world's boxing championships, between Freddy Welsh (England) and Charlie White (Chicago) for the lightweight, and Johnny Kilbane (Cleveland) and George Chaney (Baltimore) featherweight. Tho Welsh-White match took placo at Colorado Springs, and was scheduled for twenty rounds. The Kil-bane-Chaney match was at' Cedar Point, Ohio, and was limited to fifteen rounds. In tho Welsh-White match, Welsh was favourite. The crowd was so great •that tho grandstand collapsed and forty peoplo were injured, many seriously. In the lightweight match, Welsh was tho aggressor at tho opening, getting soveral blows Jioine on White in the region of the kidneys. The first four rounds were even. There was a lot of clinching and in-fighting, and the bout was even until the eighth, which was Welsh's round. White frequently_ up-per-cut Welsh. Tho twelfth was White,'* round. The contest went the full twenty rounds, -when Welsh obtained tho deoisi(sn, and retained the championship. Tho champion clinched very much towards the finish. Welsh was hanging on at the final bell. The crowd disliked the decision, and hurled cushions at the referee, Mr. Roche. Kilbane retained the feather-weight championship. Tho fight was ■ disappointing. The first round was slightbm Kilbane's favour, and the second even. The fight ended suddenly in the third, when Ivilbnne knocked out Chaney with a left? -to the jaw.
