The Hon. G. W. Russell will return to Wellington by the Main Trunk train this morning. Mr. Alexander Macintosh retired from the position of superintendent of Messrs. Dalgety and Co., ' Ltd.-, on August 31, and Mr. W. D. Stewart, of Christcnurch, has succeeded liim. As a mark of appreciation of the services rendered by Mr. Macintosh during the oight years ho filled the position .now vacated, the board of directors voted him a sum of £2000. The Very Rev. Dean Smyth, S.M., Provincial, is reported to he seriously ill in Wellington. Mr. William Ferguson announced at yesterday's meeting of the War Relief Association that he would be leaving Wellington for a matter of ten days, and that during his absence Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp would act as chairman of the association. Mr. S. Inder, late Assistant-Inspector of Post Offices, has been provisionally appointed postmaster at Palmcrston North, vice Mr. W. Beswick, who has been promoted to bo chief postmaster at Wanganui. Captain V. Dunn, late of Auckland, who has been appointed Adjutant of the Post and Telegraph Corps of Now Zealand, has arrived in Wellington, and has taken up his duties on the Staff Division. Mr. E. J. Penrose has resigned tho position' of honorary interviewer to the War Relief Association. ( The chairman (Mr. W. Ferguson) i announced that probably some other gentlemanywould volunteer to assist them in this way, when it was known that thero was a vacancy. Mr. C. H. Holdsworth, managing director of the "Union Steam Ship Company, arrived in Auckland from Sydney by tho Makura yesterday. Mr. J. Mihvard, manager in the Pacific for tho Pacific Cable Board, leaves Auckland to-day for Vancouver.

,Dr. and Mrs. Hill Janiieson, of Sydney, arrived in Auckland by the Makura yesterday.

Mr. A. D. Cook, resident secretary oF tho Royal Insurance Company, Ltd., Wellington, is leaving for Melbourne on a short business trip, and during his absence Mr. A. C. Baker, of the Auckland Branch of the company, will tako charge. '

Mr. Rcnnell paid n- visit to the Old Country a few years ago, and for some time ; sinco bis return had been suffering 'in health.

The largo list of pioneers who havo died during tho last three or four months has been increased by two by tho deaths of Lieut. John Henry Bald, win and Mr. Frederick Manx. LieutJohn Henry Baldwin, an old Crimean veteran, died at, Mcanen on Wedncsday last, in his 87th year. Deceased, who had an adventurous career, arrived in New Zealand from England in tho Southern Cross "in 1857. ■ Mr. Froderick Manz, aged SB, an old resident of Palmerston North, died last week.' The late Mr. Manz arrived in Now Zealand forty years ago by the ship Gutenberg, tho voyage to Welling, ton taking ninety-seven days.. Mr. H. 0. Manz, of Wellington, is a son of deceased.
