ASHORE FOE FOURTEEN TEARS. Undisturbed by the failure of three large wrecking companies to reclaim, the stranded! steamer Sesostris. formerly of the Kosraos Line, the British iUlvagc tug Pilot lias left Vancouver for Ooos, Guatemala. in an effort to salvage the vessel, which has been high and dry for nearly 14 years (says the Sydney "Shipping List"). While loading coffee for Hamburg on October 8, 1902, the Sesostris slipped her moorings and drifted on to the beach. Tho steamer, which is of 7000 tons gross, was last reported lying in a small basin 100 ft. from tho sea. and surrounded by high banks of sand. Tho hull and engines arc said to be in good condition. Shipping men say that with the present liigh cost of tonnage the ship could bo. sold for £200,C00. Last March Captain William Bissett, of I Vancouver, returned to that city from 1 Gautemola, where he went to look into the possible salvage of tho wreck of this vessel* When the Sesostris, which is 378 ft. long, wont ashore she piled up on a sandy ueacb. and the sand rapidly banked up against the hull until she was settled in the sands some hundreds of yards from the sea. After some. years the German Kosnios Line sold the vessel to a Mexican as a liopeloss case, but this particular Mexioan was a man of brains. While shipping registers wiped out the Sesostris. the buyer of tho vessel went to work, and with lOin. suction pumps made an artificial lake. Even while doing go he was canny, for he dTedged outside first. Tho vessel took a heel that way, and tho owner then obtained a crew and painted the windward side of the hull. Reversing tin» -process, ho managed to clean and paint tho other side. Then the dredging was continued until a lake 20ft. deep was niado and water enough seeued in to float the vessel, which, when Captain Bissett was Lhfrc, drew about 12ft. after and 9ft forward. t . A schooner named tho Defiance has been fixed to loa<l lumber at Pacific Slope port© for Wellington towards the end of the year. Tho four-masted schooner Honoipn, 564 tons, will load a similar cargo for Lyttelton from the eamo place at about the same time. Inquiries having been made, concerning the destination of tlic three-masted schooner Bertha Dolbccr, it has been ascertained that she is bringing general cargo from San Francisco to Wellington. It is many years since a similar freight hfl.s' been brought down by a sailing ship. While on her way from Taurautra to Whakatano in the early hours of Thursday morning, the Northern Company's steamer Tasman bumped a submerged rock near the ftaurimu Island?. Four boats were swung out, and passengers quickly adjusted lifebelts. Tho vessel, however, gradually floated off, and continued her journey, arriving at 6 o'clock that morning. On examination it was fcund that the vessel had suffered very little by the accident. Efforts are now being made to obtain a crew to take the steamer Petane from Lyttelton to her new owners in South Africn.

Consequent upon her lafco departure from West Coast ports, the Mapourika was late in arriving at Wellington this week-end. She will leave here, as usual, to-morrow for Picton, Nelson, and West ! Coast ports. Overhaul to the Oonnna lias been completed at Port dimmers, and tho vessel is due here on Wednesday, to load for New Plymouth. She will then take up her usual running again. The great improvement made in the port of Gisborne by the removal of a silt bank opposite No. 3 shed has been shown by the faot that t.he s.s. Calm was able to berth there, and unloaded, roughly about 700 tons of cargo. The Uattie Luckenbach, from New York, is now expected to reach Auckland on Thursday next, and wilt proceed to Wellington after finishing at Auckland.
