THE WRECKED TONGARIRO
SALVAGE OPERATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, September 2. The chances of salvage of that portion of the cargo above water on the 'I'ongariro are good shoukl the weather remain calm. The Koutumii is at present at the scene of tho wreck. The To Aroha leaves for there to-night, talcing winches and necessary equipment. Tho trouble, is that all the cargo will have to he taken off in surfboats, as tho coastal vessels cannot bo taken alongside with safety. At the Missions to Seamen song service yesterday evening, the one passenger who was travelling on tho Tongariro when she -was wrecked bore testimony to the bravery of tho stewardess and the officers and men when the vessel struck. The crow have been looked after by tho Mission since they arrived in Wellington, and Mr. James Moore expressed his thanks to those who had made contributions which had enabled him to assist the men.
