HEROES OF JUTLAND BATTLE
BURIALS IN NORWAY. ' •lie following is the translation of on article which appeared in the "TonsLergs Blad," of Juno 26, a Norwegian paper, published ftt Tonsberg, Norway (for which we are indebted to Mr. A. W, Newton, Norwegian CoiiBul in Wellington) "On Sunday, June 25, 1916,. ah unusual, But also touching, incident took place in the ancient cemetery belonging lo Tonsberg,. Norway's oldest seaport, as 13 heroes from tße Jutland sea battle were laid to their last resting place in presence of an immense gathering of sympathetic men, women, and children.
"At 3 o'clock in the afternoon, sa the naval oil launches glided slowly up the narrow fjord, with 18 caskets on board, containing the remains of British and German heroes from the Jutland sea battle, a hushed and sad crowd of men and women gathered along the wharf to t&ke part iti doing honour unto the dead- As the caskets were gently raised by the naval nicn unto the 13 carriages one could l see on every caslet a largo wreath with rib15ons in Norwegian colours, with the inscription, 'From the Norwegian Navy,' and. neforo the cortege started many wreaths were placed on every casket 6.v tlij ladies. Tho cortege was headed by the. Naval Band, and a detachment of marine soldiors,. nitK arms reversed, then officers, non-coms., blu«<. jackcts from the Norn egiari men-of-war, mercantile marine unions with . their draped banners, City Council, followed by men and women of every agft .and station in life. The chief mourner# vera two naval officers, the British and. the German consuls. At the entrance to the cemetery th# local Choral Society mot the cortege, and sang appropriate hytnm a* it wended Hb wiy.to the grave. As every casket was lowered tho soldiers presented arms, the "Last l'ost". sounded for every h«r n » while tho British, German, arid 1 Norwegian flags floated ovei" the graves m the gentle breeze. The naval commander placed a Trreath on the graye with tho following words: 'Wo nave not been able to do any more for these, our comrades, who died for their country, but to give them n resting place which the citizens will .look after with tho tenderest sympathy. Honoured be their memory.' "Both tho British and Gorman coiv liWko placed wreaths on the graves with appropriate words. It is interesting to note that these bodies must have drifted from 10.1 to lSOmilea from the place, wtiero the battlo took place. Altogether 46 bodies from.tha hJiVft found a resting nlnce in the above-mentioned cemetery."
