Infantile Paralysis and Miss Booth. On Tuesday the cabled news received that Dr. Simon Floxuer, director of tho Rockefeller Medical Institute, is convincedl of the value of treating infantilo paralysis by serum taken trom tho people who have recovered is of particular interest in view of t'ho recent outbreak of the disease ill New Zealand, and its interest is emphasised by tho further announcement that Miss Theodora. Booth, ft daughter, of General Booth, of the Salvation Army, has offered to submit to inoculation with infantile paralysis virus in order that experiments may be carried out 17111011 may help to save babies (states the Auckland "star"). Questioned on Wednesday morning as to whether tho medical profession placed much faith in inoculation for the treatment of infantile paralysis, Dr. T. Y. Hughes, of tho Auckland l Public Health Office, who was in charge of tho district during the outbreak of last summer, whicli 500 victims, reniarked that DrT Flexner had long ago"announced that he had discovered a serum for tho treatment of the disease, and various medical men made experiments vi th it. In the majority of eases, however, it was reported that the results had not been encouraging. On the other hand, Dr. Flexner declared that he had obtained highly satisfactory results, and his faith in inoculation was apparently not' weakened by his experience during the recent terrible outbreak of the disease in New York. During the outbreak of the disease in New Zealand!, added Dr. Hughes, attempts W6re made to import tlie serum to New Zealand, but Tt was unobtainable. AVith regard to Miss Both's offer, Dr. Hughes observed that it was. doubtless a notye one and of practical • value to the medical profession. It had beeii found possible to experiment to some extent with 'animals, notably monkeys, but the results were not so valuable as would be those with a human being. .It was found, in experimenting with monkeys, that on injecting the virus the aninjal developed all the symptoms, including paralysis, hut when given erotopin first tlio premonitory symptoms developed without tho actual paralysis. When the disease had ■ developed the blood was drawn off, and the serum obtained from it. Probably this precaution would be taken in tho case of Miss Booth if her offer were accepted. Nevertheless there would be a certain amount of ' risk, and any woman "who 'would consent to be inoculated with the disease, and to have such quantities of blood drawn off as were reequired, vraa making <v very fine sacrifice 011 behalf.of scienco and humanity.
