The Ngakuta left for Greymouth last evening, and is expected back on -Saturday. COMMONWEALTH STEAMERS. According to the London shipping jour' nal, "Fair-play," the ta.sk o buying the 15 vessels for tho Commonwealth Government was entrusted to Messrs. Turner aud Davidson and Company, who acquired the steamers at the {allowing prices:— £ Strathendrick, 4370 tons 145,000 fitrathavon, 4405 tons 145,000 Strathairly, 4326 lons 145,000 Strathhord, 4417 tons 145,000 Strathleven. 4396 tons 145,000 Strathdee, 4400 tons 145,000 Strathspey, 4432 tons 145,000 Strathbeg, 4358 ions 145,0C0 Stratbgarry, 4393 tons 145,000 Strathesk, 4336 tons 145,000 Ardangorn, 3570 tons 145,000 Ardanmhor, 4454 tons 125,000 Vermont, 4271 tons 110,000 Daltonhall, 3539 tons 80,000 Kirkoswald, 4021 tons 158,000 Commenting on the purchase of the vessels, "Pair-play" expresses the fear that if the vessels are transferred to Australian registry, and are not subjected to the excess profits, duty, and income tax. the Commonwealth Government will make snch profits "as will encourage Labour members to go in wholesale for shippiug, with the result that our shipowners, who are being handicapped at the present time by heavy taxation, will have to submit to such unfair oompotition that they will be driven out of the trade. It is not expected that ota Government will have sufficient backbone to refuse tie transfer of the registry from London to Australia, but it is considered that they ought to adopt that attitude so. that the vessels will not be placed on a preferential footing*"
The Walton Hall, a steamer of 4932 tons, •with Captain G. Clark .in charge, arrived at iyttelton on Monday. At Lytteltau the vessel discharges 900 tons of cargo, and then proceeds to Dunedin and Australia. Advice has been received by the TJnion Steamship Company that the Paloona left, Dunodin at 3 p.m. yesterday, and is. dun at iLyttelton to-day end Wellington o?.i Friday. She will sail for southern porta on the same day. It is understood that the Government steamer Hinemoa, at present on the northern lighthouse visit, is sheltering at Cape Runaway, and is unable to laud stores at the East Cape lighthouse on account of heavy seas. After finishing at East Oapo tho Hinemoa. will proceed to Ourier Island and Auckland. The Pakeha, according to the Auckland "Herald," is expected at Auckland on Tuesday. She will visit various southern ports after finishing at Auckland, The Kaiapoi, which is expected here on Monday from Auckland, is to pick up cargo from here, and will sail. for southern .ports as soon as possible. The Kini, which is loaded at We.-.tport. and ready to sail, cannot do so on ac : count of the heavy sea a.nd flooded state of the river. Tho Moera.ki. which left Lyttelton last night, is due here this morning, and leaves this day at 5 p.m. for Sydney and Hobart directMr. J. A.
