MANAWATU HUNT CLUB HUNT cur VP OX BY CI IA BAN. (By our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, Angust'3o. Tho ilan.awatu Hunt .Club's meeting took place to-day in fine, but very cold weather. The attendance was fair, but tho going was on tho heavy sido. There were seven runners in tho Hunters' Hurdles, and tho public preferred Merry Jack and Tureluina in that order. I'apalitz ran off at tlio first fence, and Joey did likewise at the next obstacle. Passing tlio stand Pikilio was in chargo, but racing down the back Strategist took charge, and led over the last fence, when llerry Jack took charge, but after a great finish Traill got uj> again on Strategist, and won by a head. Turcbana, who carried Mr. 0. D. Bc-atson's colours, was thifec lengths away, ami tlieu camo rikilio.

For the Maiden Handicap there were some, very green horses saddled up. Altercation moved as vrell as anything in the preliminaries, and Maisie Bell stripped an improved mare, but Trapping was backward. Soon after the start Lady Frisco .rushed to tho front, end, followed by Hehi, led round tho bend, well clear of the others. In the straight she hold her ow'n, and won in hollow fashion. . There was a good race for second place, Hastie, Wapping, and Kylona finishing in a line. Jfaisie Bell got stopped, and interfered with Altercation. Sarid and Ban Iry were slow to find their feet, and .run in the rear the whole w ay. Chaban, who comes from the same stable as Jackman, and is owned by Mr. T. B. Taylor, of Kiwilea, wan sorted out as the best of good things for the Hunt Club Steeplechase, and after a good, oveu exhibition of jumping, he was all out to win from Merry Jack, who did not fence too well, but his condition curried him on at the finish. Avon kept Clmban company for moro than i£ circuit, when he cried enough, and Merry Jack moved np, but Deorey handled the winner splendidly, and had a ncck to the good at the finish. Moocher, who car-' ried Mr.' E. Short's colours, found the fences too high. • Flamingo ran off, and Peach Fie and Papa fell. Starengo stripped well in the Levin Hack Handicap, and the AVanganui horso was mads a slightly better favourite than Martyress and Nainur. The two favourites were in command at tho straight entrance, but Namur and Black and Amber teero with them, and the finish looked like being a close one till Hastio swept up on the outside, and won decisively. Black and Amber just beat Starengo and Namur, and Martyress finished' in that order. Starengo will bs improved by tho lace. ' i ■ ■

I'he Bracelet was a runaway affair for Matlock, who was ridden by his owner, Mr. ,T: B. Gaisford. He jumped to the front seven furlongs from home, and established a big break, which tho others were unable to reduce. The favourite, Cron , Park, just beat Strategist. The winner is by Martello, from an Itopo mare. Lady Renown and "Waimat® shaped best of the unplaced division. There were only three runners in the Hack Welter Handicap, but the public were astray in their calculations, and the outsider of the trio won. This was Sir Fisher, who stripped very big. but ridden in behind, he came away in the straight, and won by a neck from Sir Donald, with Iviiropai, who made the early running, in 1 third place. Almadale, Meltua, and Crystal Star were evenly backed in the Otaki Steeples. Meltua led for a mile, when Alma-dale took charge, but passing the Highden Btablos Crystal Star ran. to tho front, and won very easily from Almadale. Flamingo was a poor third. Meltua was the only, other to finish. Lady Frisco, who had scored earlier in the afteruoon, easily annex.ed tho concluding event from another well-backed candidate in Janitor. The winner got. all the worst of tho start, but won -well at- tho finish. She is by sir Frisco, and is tile first of the progeny of that horse to win.
