The iitsfc conviction under the. now War Hegulations relating to the social evil was recorded in Wellington yestorday a woman being sentenced to two months' imprisonment on a chargo 'of having loitered in a public place for an immoral purpose. The powers possessed by tho police under the regulations are much wider than the powors provided under the, old law, and steps are being taken with the object of "cleaning up" Wellington, in the interests of soliilora and civilians alike. Owners of premises used for immoral purposes are liable to penalties under the War Regulations. Tho powers of prosecution conferred upon the police m this direction are new, and it is understood that some landlords aro al ready taking stops to protect them, selves against tenants whose undesirable manner of living lia<l not previously caused them anxiety. The police are giving warnings where they appeal to be required.
