First, tho Italian - declaration of war on Germany; then .Rumania's, decision to fight for the Allies; now comes one froni Germany—General von Falkenhayn, Chief of the German General Staff, tho gambler-soldier, who las gambled with armies and human' lives very much as in more peaceful days he wasted his substance at cards, has been dismissed. Ctenld one ask for a more convincing proof of the Allies'.': successes? Von Hindenburg will euccced the deposed favourite of the Kaiser. The Rumanian offensive is developing in tlio mountains of Transylvania, ■ I where a fierce conflict for the possession of the passes info' Hungary is in progress. Rumania is well prepared for war; she can raise over a million men, and has : vast stores of equipment and munitions —ample, indeed, for'eight months ahead. Tho nature of.the country in which the Rumanian troops are operating is so difficult that progress foi- some time will be slow. .Meanwliilo, in the neighbouring : State of Bulgaria, a crisis is smouldering.
