AN ILLEGAL GAME

CHINESE IN TROUBLE

llr. L. G. Eeid presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterdny. As a result of a recent police raid in Hainiiig Street and Tarnnaki Street, the «.mnil court-room was practically filled with accused Chinese and their friends. On the night of August 18 a squad of police, in charge of Detective- Andrews. Senior Sergeant Dew, Sergeants Scott and Cruickshnnks, paid surprise visits to the streets mentioned, and apprehended seven. Chinese. All were taken into custody, and charged .with various breaches of the Gaming Act. The premises in question are situated at 3 Haiuing Street, 41 Hairing Street, 143 TaranaUi Street, and G Hairing Street. After two remands had been granted, the Chinese made their reappearance yesterday, and as on the former occasions fhey were represented by Mr. H. F. O'l.eary. Inspector Heudrey conducted Hie prosecutions. Only two cases against men who were termed "principals," and n case against two Chinese who were found on gaining premises, were proceeded with. Tho ca-*o against the latter two was disirissed. hut convictions were recorded against the two "principals." Fines ' were not imposed yesterday on account of several cases of a similar nature having to be dealt with on Friday next, at , 2.1 a p.m. 'I'lie ■names of the two Chinee who wero . eonricled of keening houses for the piirnnse of promoting an illegal lottery, namely, pak-a-poo, wore Ah Kee and rjo ov!re Wo"". Elliott appeared to answer a charge of drunkenness, and also a charge of having used obscene language in Molesworth Street. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and was remanded till to-day, bail Being allowed.

CIVIL ACTIONS. MOTOR MECHANICS AT LAW. A claim for ,£IOO was the subject of a civil action, in which the plaintilf was Albert Patrick James Hayes, and 'the do. fondant Robert Stewart M'Kenge. Both parties to the dispute are motor mechanics, of Lower llutt. Tho statement of claim set out that plaintiff and defendant were up to July 1, 1911, partners in the business of motor garage proprietors at Lower Hutt. under the styie of Hayes and M'Keage. By , mutual consent the partnership was dissolved on July 1, 191-', and since tho dissolution it was alleged that defendant had received various sums of money belonging to the late partnership. It was claimed that of the sums collected by defendant, ,£IOO or more belonged to plaintiff, on account of his share. The latter nad applied to defendant to render un aocount of the moneys belonging to the late partnership received by him, and of how such moneys had been disposed. It was alleged that defendant had refused to render an account, and plaintiff therefore claimed the sum of £100 alleged to have been received by the defendant for, and on behalf of, plaintiff. The latter also asked the Court to order defendant to render an account of all moss? received by him on account of the partnership. Plaintiff also aaked for the appointment, of a receivor. Mr. O. N. Beere appeared for tho plain. tiff, and Mr. A. M. Salek for defendant. After partial hearing the case was adjourned sine die.

CLAIM FOB'-NURSING. Mr. W. G. Biddell, S.M., heard tho following cases:— Margarot Adams, of 19 Horner Street, Wellington, claimed from her brothers, Hendry Walden and George Buckley Walden, as executors of the estate of James Walden, deceased, tho sum of £i"> for services rendered in nursing and attending the late James Walden, prior to his death. 'The time stipulated was between December 28, 1913, to' July 27, 1914—30 ireeks, at tho rate of-305.. per week. Mr. P. W. Jaokson appeared for tho plaintiff, and Mr. Howard Hill for defendants. It was contended for the defence that tho money had been paid in Ootober, 1911, a few -weeks after the death of the father of the. parties. His Worship indicated that he. would give hia decision to-morrow.

JUDGMENT SUMMONS. In a judgment, summons case Win. E. Finney was orderecT"to pay James Smith, Ltd., the sum of M is. lOd. on or before September 12, in default four days' imprisonment. WARRANT FOR POSSESSION. Judgment was given lor Dwan Bros, against William Fifzpatrick for the sum of JIG 17s. 6d. for rent, together -with a warrant to issue on Septembar 13 for possession. Costs amounting 17b. Gd, were allowed.
