THE WAR LOAN

CERTIFICATES STILL SELLING FREELY. It is reported that a sum of over £18,000 was invested in War Loan Certificates in the chief centres of the Dominion on Monday. It is interesting to note the manner in which the various centres are contributing' to the loan through the sale of certificates. On Monday, Christchurch headed the list with 584 £10 and 370 £1 certificates ; Auckland! came next with 439 £10 and 529 £11 certificates; Wellington (which has usually led) third with--320 £10 and 95 £1 certificates; while Duuedin only bought 150 £10 and 73 £1 certificates. Even Invercargill heat Dunedin, for on Monday 159 £10 and 46 £1 certificates wore sold in the Southland contre. The screen on which pictures and good advice havo been shown during the week on Lambton Quay is being removed from the Bank of New Zealand to M'Gill's Buildings, opposite the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in Willis Street. There are ■ many hundreds of people parade the City of an evening who do not reach Lamhton Quay—another indication of tho trend of the City south-eastward. At a board meeting of the directors of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., on Monday, it was resolved to invest £20,000 in the recently issuod Government War: Loan.

Some of the leading firms in Wellington, and the City Council, have already agreed to purchase certificates for their employees in return for small weekly repayments, and consequently substantial suras in this way have been subscribed to the loan. The War Loan lecturer (Mr. R. C. O'Connor, of the National Provident Fund Department) now reports that Messrs. Veitch and Allan and tho Wellington Woollen Co. have decided to do likewise. Several other houses await the authority of their respective directors in this connection, but it is anticipated that this will be readily given.
