NIGHT OPERATIONS

SEVENTEENTHS IN THE FIELD Since the Seventeenth Infantry Reinforcements moved into Trenthani Camp for advanced infantry training, in-addi-tion to musketry and trench warfare, the country in the Upper Hutt 7 alley has regained much of the military business that it had in days gone by, when Trentham was the only training camp for tho Expeditionary Forces. For the past week reconnoitring parties ■of officers and men have been mapping out tho country in preparation for the field manoeuvres' and 'night operations which will begin, this morning and conclude on Friday. These will be held over an area extending from Moonshine Road, which runs across -the hills to Pahautanui and the Silverstrcain Railway Bridge. There is ample room in the valley for effective work. One-half of the Seventeenths, consisting of E, F, G, H, and half of J Company, will march out of camp at 11 o'clock this morning, and will make a midday halt at Moonshine Bridge, which crosses the Hutt River. During the afternoon positions will be taken -up' for the night operations. This body a F troops will' return to camp to-morrow afternoon. To-morrow morning, A, J3, C, D,. a lid the other half of J Company will leave the camp, and their work in the field will begin with an a ttack on a position east of Moonshine Road. The operations will, however, extend as far as Silvcrstreani. Lieutenant-Colonel C. R. Macdonald, Chief Infantry Instructor, wi'l direct the whole of the operations. -
