MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr W. 6. Biddell, S.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court on Saturday. IWward Charles Sadler, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, was charged witli unlawful assault on Charles Henry Faulkner, also with causing' damage to a pane of glass, a gas-fi£ ting, and, a,door. Ho was convicted', and fined 20s. and costs, witnesses' expenses, and ordered to pay damages', 235., default boing fixed at seven days' imprisonment. Lawrence Donnelly, a seaman on the barque Manurewa, for being absent from the vessel, was ordered to forfeit two days' pay and pay 7s. costs; for disobeying the captain, ho was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment; and for disobeying the mato ho was ordered to pay solicitor's costs, 215., default"being fixed at seven days' imprisonment.

For insobriety, four first offenders wer« convicted and discharged. Eric Norman- M'Alinden, who had four previous convictions, was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, and a_ prohibition order was issued'against him. ._ Jane Woollcy, also charged with insobriety, was remanded for medical treatment., Edward Foreman, on charges of theft of jewellery, was further remanded to September 2, bail being allowed as previously. Thomas Ridout, oharged with theft, tvas remanded to Wednesday, and was allowed bail in £50 and one surety of £50. ,

CIVIL ACTION. A civil action was heard by Mr. W. G. -Riddel], S.M.', on Saturday, in which C. S. Headland, motor mechanic, for whom MK J. J. M'Grath appeared, from Howard Spackman, taxiproprTetor, of' Taranaki Street, represented by' Mr. E. C. Levvey, tho sum of £11 ss. 2d., balance of account for repairs _to and overhaul of a taxi. Tho olaim was disputed, tho defendant maintaining that tho repairs were badly done, and he was obliged to go elsewhere to got the work properly finished. After hearing evidence, tho Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £6 and costs £2 Bs.

' At tho Mount Cook Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. W. IT. Coy, J.P., Patrick Daly, an old ofi'cndor, was fined 10s., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness.
