NOTES AND COMMENTS
!By Glencoe.l Horseowners aiid trainers are reminded, that nominations for all events of the Wnnganui -.Jockey Club's Spring (Meeting, and first forfeits for tho Jackson Stakes, will close with the secretary, Mr. Win. Hall, to-night, at 9i30 o'clock. According to a Jlasterton report Chillies has been bought by Mr. P. Bright of the Blairlogie Hotel. He will continue, to be trained 'at Jlasterton. ■To mark their appreciation of the manner in which K. liae steered Waimai to victory in tho New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, the Waikato sportsmen, Messrs. Wilson Brothers, have presented the Auckland horseman with a valuable gold' chronometer, which bears an inscription suitable to the occasion.
The Manawatu Hunt Club's annual meeting will be hold on the AwapUni racecourse on Wednesday next. Special trains have been arranged for to convey visitors to the coiu-;e, and the New Plymouth express will stop at Awapuni both going and coming. ■Since the declaration, of handicaps for the New Zealand Cup Marc Antony has retained his position as prime fancy for that event. As his one-time projected trip to Australia has been abandoned, the \ 7 arco colt can be regarded as a certain starter in the Tticcarton race. He is in splendid trim for the time of year, and will probably be sharpened up by a race or two at some of the early spring meetings. -'The motto "Horses for courses" has never been better exemplified than in the case of Art at Iticcarton. At four meetings at which ho has competed on that course he has run six firsts and two seconds. His two wins at tl.e recent meeting were worth 1)15 sovs., which is an excellent start for the new season. Atuatoro, the winner of the Hack Welter Handicap at the Bannevirlco meeting, is a live-year-old brother, to Tangimoana, by San Pian—Waingongoro, by Torpedo—Cascade, by Sledmere—Waterwitch. Atuatoro has shown decent form more than once lately, and he gives promise of developing into a good horse this season.
There are 35 horses in work at Karanui under StuaA't AVaddell's supervision, inchttling a number of particularly smart two-year-olds. Some of the latter are very forward, ami should bo capable of acquitting themselves in the early juvenile events. As is the cast'in most training establishments,' work at Karanui ;» greatly hampered by a scarcity of stable boys. When Idealism fell in the Lincoln Steeplechase at the Grand National Meeting, his rider (W. Bush) strained the muscles of his back rather badly. The ex-Kiccariou horseman has l>eon under medical treatment since the' mishap, but hopes to be able to return to lCnrnmu next week. It was generally accepted that Idealism's downfall was brought about by colliding with Queen's Post when she fell, but Bush slates that such i» not ths case. As a matter of fact, the gelding took-olf too far from the fence, and fell on landing. Keports from Napier credit Desert Gold with having wintered* particularly well, and she is in great trim to start the new season's campaign. .So far, she has only been given the lightest of tasks, but will soon bo' hurried along, in view of early spring engagements. The Wnnganui Guineas candidate Hyllun reads well in the- Alnrton Handicap with 7st. 91b. There is 191b. between ho and the top-weight, tomato Deal, while in the Now Zealand Cup there- is only lib. between the pair. The- Kicearton mentor, V. U. Jones, is tnkiii" a team to the Ashburton meeting, and fas arranged for the services of tho local rider, A. Reed.
