DOCTOR'S VIEWS OF TOBACCO. Dr. Perkins, Commonwealth medical officer attached to the Post and Telegraph Department, through whoso hands thousands of officers of the service pass each year, holds distinct opinions concerning tho use of tobacco and alcohol. In the Commonwealth Arbitration Court last week ho was asked whether he would consider the use of tobacco harmful to a man working as a telegraphist. D. Perkins: Yes, if used in excess. Mr. Justice Powers: Then you beliove in the notice "No smoking." Dr. Perkins: I believe in moderation. Mr. Hesketh: What would you consider moderate use of tobacco? Dr. Perkins: TVo pipes a day. Anything beyond that I consider would' be harmful. His Honour: Would you consider it harmful to men in other occupations? ; Dr. Perkins: Yes, if. the persons smoked more than two pipes a day. Mr. Hesketh: All agree that the use of intoxicants is harmful and dangerous. Are you of that opinion? Dr. Perkins: Over indulgence in alcohol is harmful. His Honour: Would you limit a man to two glasses a day? Dr. Perkins: I am of opinion that an ordinary healthy man does not need alcohol at all.

A party of soldiers under the charge of an officer who was great on discipline, wore marching Along a road in Belgium. Preaentely the party passed somo of tho Navvies' Battalion, who were doing road repairs, and one of them stood' with his pipe in his mouth.
