ZEPPELIN RAID

ON THE OUTSKIRTS OP LONDON Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, August 25. A Zeppelin on the outskirts of London dropped forty bombs. Bight people wero killed and thirty-six injured. (Keutcr's Tclceram.) London, August 2<i. A Berlin official message- states: "On August 23 our airships attacked a fortress of London." SIX NIGHT RAIDERS ON EAST ANd'sOUTH-EAST COASTS Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, August 25. Six airships raided the East a-ud South-east Coasts at intervals from midnight to 3 a.m.' With a single exception, the raiders carried out short inroads ovor the coast. Sovcral are reported to have been directed against ships. Anti-aircraft guns came into action on land and also aboard -ships at sea. Some of our aircraft went in pursuit, and an aeroplano fired on an airship, which eluded the pursuers in the clouds.

CIVILIAN CASUALTIES EIGHT KILLED, TWENTY-ONE INJURED The High Commissioner reports: London, August 25, 1.40 a.m. Tho Wa* Office announces that sevoral airships crossed to the East and South-east Coasts shortly before midnight on Thursday. London, August 25, 11.15 a.m. Official. —Last night's air raid was carried out by six airships. The number of bombs dropped is .uncertain. Sevoral wero directed at ships at sea. The damage is slight. Iu one locality tho railway station and several houses were damaged, two horses killed, ana another two houses wrecked. Anti-aircraft guns wore in action, and one of tho aircraft was pursued by an aeroplane, which shot at tho raider at close range. Tho airship eluded the pursuer in tho clouds. , , London, August 25, '6.5 p.m. The official report says: "In the last air raid the civilian casualties were:— Killed, 8; injured, 21." MANY MARVELLOUS ESCAPES ONE HAIDER UNDER GUNFIRE. (Rec. August 23, C.5 p.m.) London, August 25.

There were many marvellous escapes in wrecked buildings. An old lady in bed on an upper floor fell with the bed into a room below, and was almost burned in the debris. She was rescued, but was seriously injured. Other ladies in lower floors escaped. Firemen rescued a. number. Thirty bombs fell in ono area, and several people were killed and injured. A bomb landed on a van, killing the driver and horse. persons were- killed in one house. One raider at a great height was under gunfire for, flfteon minutes, with searchlights playing on it and shells bursting around. Most of its bombs fell into the sea. She- fled toward Ostcnd. London, August 26. v The "Central News", says that Dutch frontier guards fired and severely damaged a Zeppelin passing over Maestricht on Friday, and compelled it to descend near Liege. ' A BERLIN REPORT. GOOD RESULTS CLAIMED. (Ilec. August 26, 5.5 p.m.) Amsterdam, August 25. A Berlin official message says: "Several airships attacked the Southeast Coast of England, and dropped many bombs on tho city, on the southwestern part of London, the batteries at Harwich and Folkestone, also on many ships in Dover Roads. Good results were observed everywhere. All the aircraft returned safely, despite heavy bombardment."
