Six airships raided the East a-ud South-east Coasts at intervals from midnight to 3 a.m.' With a single exception, the raiders carried out short inroads ovor the coast. Sovcral are reported to have been directed against ships. Anti-aircraft guns came into action on land and also aboard -ships at sea. Some of our aircraft went in pursuit, and an aeroplano fired on an airship, which eluded the pursuers in the clouds.

There were many marvellous escapes in wrecked buildings. An old lady in bed on an upper floor fell with the bed into a room below, and was almost burned in the debris. She was rescued, but was seriously injured. Other ladies in lower floors escaped. Firemen rescued a. number. Thirty bombs fell in ono area, and several people were killed and injured. A bomb landed on a van, killing the driver and horse. persons were- killed in one house. One raider at a great height was under gunfire for, flfteon minutes, with searchlights playing on it and shells bursting around. Most of its bombs fell into the sea. She- fled toward Ostcnd.
