A housewife in St. ICilda, Melbourne, tells this attractive little anecdote as an instance of the heights to which feminine cheek will rise. Sho had a caller at about eleven o'clock on Sunday night. The caller was a young woman of about twenty-four, rospectaffly dressed and . decent looking. ,f Y6u advertised for a servant?'' said the stranger. "Yob, I did, but ." "It is a curious timo to call, is it not? "I was coming on Saturday, but an accident delayed me. 1 have only been able to get about again since late this evening. Are you suited ?" The housewife was not suited, and, having heard a plausible talc, resolved that this girl would do. "I hoped I would be engaged," said the young woman, "and have left a noto with a carrier to have my dress baskets delh-ered hero on Monday. ' The fact is, I did not want to go back to the Coffee because! cannot afford it.. If you will tako hie on at once I shall be so much obliged." Sho was taken on. She slept at the house on Sunday | night, sho had breakfast on Monday morning, and twenty minutes later sho appeared, dressed' to leave. "After all," she said, "I don't think the placo will suit mo." Tlio housewife was very indignant, but her reproaches only drow this amassing response: "Tlio fact is, I missed my last train on Sunday night, and thought I would stay here.". Messrs.
