THE NATIONAL REGISTER

AMPLE CHECKS PROVIDED,

A statement was made yesterday by Mr. J. D. Gray, secretary of tho llecniiting Hoard, in reply to a letter published in Tun Dominion* of that morning in which the correspondent pointed out what appeared to liiin to bo a serious Haw in the administration of tho National Registration Act —that no receipt or actuicwlodgmcnt , was over given for registration cards. "A public statement has .already been made that every man who has registered under the National Registration Act can easily and quickly ascertain if his personal schedule duly reached the Government Statistician," said Mr. Gray. "All he requires to do is to make an application for his Certificate of Enrolment in the Expeditionary Force .Reserve on the form which will be obtainable at any and every post office in the Dominion on and after lfriday, 'September 1. If his personal schedulo failed- to reach the Government Statistician, and his name does not appear on tho National Registor, ho will be promptly notified of the fact, and asked to fill in an enrolment card under the Military Service Act. If ho is registered, ho will in due course receive an advice from the Government Statistician to the effect that his Certificate of Enrolment has been sent to the post office named in tho application, and will there he delivered to him personally by the postmaster. It has to be remembered that as between two and three hundred thousand of these certificates have to he prepared, it will be some little time before they are ready for issue. But if tho name of any man who applies for a certificate of enrolment does not appear on the Register, he will be promptly notified of that fact, and asked to' make good the o'mission. The enrolment card under the. Military Service Act will lm sent by registered post in an addressed and stamped envelope to he provided for the purpose at all post offices. "Similarly, all notifications of change of address, which the Act directs the Reservists concerned to send to the Government. Statistician, will be acknowledged when received. If a man who notifies his change of address on tli" form which will be obtainable nt all post offices on and after September 1 does not receive an acknowledgment from the Government Statistician, his safest plan is to (ill in at once another form and post it. These are to ho sent by registered post, for which ad-dressed-and stamped envelopes will be provided. Thf necessity of notifying changes of address is a very real one. because, as will be fullv exnla'iicd in -i statement to be published in the Press, carelessness or neglect in this resnecfc may easily result in a man finding himself arrested as a deserter."
