At the Skeffington inquiry, tlie Chairman, read an unpublished report by Captain Colthurst, written after his ar-, resi,' in which ho said ho did not think the barracks was safo lor desperate men like Skcffington, Dickson, and M'lntyre. Ho had heard that six hundred Germans were marching on Dublin, and that largo forces of Tebels were about to attack Portobello Barracks. Thinking that reinforcements from England would not arrivo in time to a verb a general massacre, and believing he had power under martial law, he had the three prisoners shot, regarding it as a terrible duty. Major Koseborough, in charge of Portobello Barracks, gave evidence that be did not know of the executions until afterwards. Adjutant Morgan stated that nothing incriminating was found on the prisoners. Captain Colthurst's contrary statement was untrue.
