HARMONIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT. The second annual report of the Wei- . lington Harmonic Society (to be presented at tho annual meeting at the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday) state's that the year just closed has been in every way a most; successful one. Notwithstanding the war, which has claimed several of tho male members, tho number of voices has been maintained, with a good balance of parts. In fact, for some time now thoro has been a "waiting"' list of aspiring raambors, and there is no likelihood of tho society languishing' through lack of voices. As long as it is the policy of the society to make tho practices of educational value as well as enjoyable there will be no difficulty in obtaining mombers. Three concerts have been given in the Town Hall Concert Chamber, with an increased audience on each occaeion. For tho last concert' the hall proved too small to accommodate all who sought admission, and the committee will need to consider the advisability of taking tho large hall for future concerts. Each of the concerts has been a notable success, the society having the unique experience of receiving unanimous praise from all the City papers. In fact, not an unfavourable comment of the work of the society has appeared. Most appreciative references have been, made by many musicians who have been present. The financial position of the society, too, gives cause for satisfaction, the balance-sheet showing a- credit balance after all the expenses of tho year have been met. The committee strongly urges, however, that an effort be made to largely increase the number of honorary members. The thanks of the society are due to Mr. Robert Parker for the loan of music. Mention is also mads of the work of the retiring officers, especially that of tlie energetic secretary, Mr. W. Blake; the conductor, Mr. H. Temple WhiFo; and the pianiste. Mrs. M. Siegel. The members generally are given great credit for the loyalty and enthusiasm they have displayed, and the committee consider that so long' as such a state of affairs continual the growth and improvement of the society is assured.
