CONCILIATION COUNCIL

JEWELLERS' DISPUTE SETTLED

A meeting of the" Conciliation Council was hold yesterday to deal with the dispute in the jewellery trade, particulars of which have already appeared. Messrs. C. ,B. Kline, W. C. Young, L. R. Partridge appeared for the employers,, and Messrs. J. P. Moir, J. It. Murphy, and A. Delmont for the employees. Mr. W. A. Greufoll was the employers' agent, and Mr. L. M. A. Rearden agent for the employees. The sitting lasted till 7.30 p.m., when an agreement was reached whereby four classes of work aro provided for—journeymen, journeywomen, apprentices, and femalo workers. The minimum wage for journeymen and journoywomen has been increased from £3 to £3 4s. per week. Female workers are to bo paid as follows:—For the first six months, 12s. 6d.; second six months, 155.; second year, 205.; third year, 205.; fourth year, 325. &cl.; and thereafter not less than £2 per week. The- hours of labour remain as before, 46} per week. Holidays remain ,as under the old award, with the addition of Boxing Day and Anniversary Day. Apprentices shall servo six years,-ana be paid during that period: For tho first year, 10s.; second year, 155.; third,*2os.; fourth, 255.; fifth, 325. 6d.; and sixth, 40s. Tho proportion of apprentices to journeymen shall not exceed one to every threo journeymen or fraction of three. In other respects the Court's apprenticeship applies. The term of engagement is weekly. The Court clauses for undcr-rato workers and preference are provided in the new agreement, which operates in the Wellington industrial district. The dato on which tho agreement will commence to operate will bo fixed hy tho Court. The Commissioner will hear tho musicians' dispute to-day.
