Anglo-Swedish correspondence which has been published, relating to Sweden's detention of British parcel mails to Russia'as a reprisal for\tho . action of the British in searching', Sweden's parcel mail for contraband, shows that Sweden announced a reprisal measure on December 18. Viscount Grey (Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) requested that the mails should bo immediately released, adding that his Government would welcome an explanation for their detention. '
Sweden justifying her action, by a so-called British violation of binding treaties and the law of the nations.
Viscount Grey replied that such a grave charge was unusual in diplomatic documents, and niust be repudiated in the strongest manner. Britain's action had been scrupulously correct, whereas Sweden's was wholly and avowedly illegal, constituting a direct' challenge to Britain's national sovereignty.
