PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

COUNTRY INSPECTOR PROPOSED. Tho Society lor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals .met yesterday afternoon. Mr. P. Meadowcroft presided. The chairman stated that the ,society's expenditure was exceeding its revenue. The .average weekly income "was £4 Is. 2d., and. the expenditure £4 16s. 9d. Mr. R. H. 'Webb moved thai the society should consider the matter of appointing an inspector to look after tlie outlying districts. In stressing the need for such a step, ho remarked that he knew oi' two cases in which cruelty was practised on animals, but the cases could not be dealt with without an inspector to pay attention to the districts in which the occurrences were taking place. The money needed to pay for this extension of operations could, ho felt certain, be raised. The Rev. J. Reed Glasson seconded the motion pro forma, and said the only question was that of _ finance. The chairman doubted if the results would justify the expenditure. It was resolved- that the Rev. Mr. Glasson and Mr. Webb should wait on the Advisory • Committee to the Macarthy Trust respecting the possibility of financial assistance, and report to a subsequent meeting. The list of collections for the fortnight ended August 22 was presented as follows:—Mrs. H. P. Rawson, the Right Hon. W. P. Massey, the Hon. J. G. W.
