N.Z. ACCOUNTANTS
4 ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Accountanta was lield in Wellington last evening. Mr. J. S. Barton presided. The annual report was adopted. Extracts from the report are:—"With a view to assisting returned partially disabled soldiers in obtaining clerical employment, your council adopted a scheme whereby the society provides free clerical training in ollice routine and bookkeeping to such men as are recommended therefor by the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department of the New Zealand Government. The course covers the usual work necessary for the. society's examination in practical mercantile bookkeeping, and in addition to providing tlis necessary training, the society, by special arrangement with the University of Now Zealand, has undertaken to pay the examination and certificate fees of eucli men as tha instructors recommend as fit to sit for examination. Your council is pleased to report that the University papers, have maintained the high standard of previous years, and the examinations must lift considered a thoroughly practical test in the respective subjects. The grants to the four University Colleges, amounting 111 all to ifiioO, have been made during the year, and this has been supplemented as heretofore by an additional grant of JBIOO from the luoorpornted Institute of Accountants of New Zealand. The payment made during this year is the last of five payments undertaken at the time the scheme was entered into, and your council now has under consideration the question of a renewal of the arrangement. The attention of members is directed to the following new rulo under tha Judicature Act, 1908:—TVhere thero is a reference of accounts to nn accountant, or to the Registrar and an accountant, then unless otherwise ordered, tlie accountant shall bo selected from members of the New -Zealand Society of. Accountants classified as public 'accountants.' It ie proposed at the conclusion of tho present war to institute a scheme of scholarships for competition by students attending recognised secondary schools throughout the Dominion. "In accordance with the regulations of the society, tlie following members of the council retired:—Auckland, Mr. Henry Cromwell Tewsley; Wellington, Mr. Arthur Thomas Clarke; Canterbury. Mr. W. E. Best; Otago, Mr. Walter Green; Taranaki, Mr. Laurence M'Kenzio M'Laurin Monteath; Poverty Bay, Mr. A. G. Beere. All wero re-elected unopposed except Messrs. Beere (Poverty Bay) and Best (Canterbury). Mr. Beere did not seek re-election, and Mr. C. G. Piesso was elected to represent tho district. The Canterbury seat was contested, but tho contest.resulted in the re-election of Mr.
Best."
