POLITICAL MOVE TO FRIGHTEN GREECE
STEADY PROGRESS OF \ THE RUSSIANS CARPATHIAN HEIGHTS SEIZED LOCAL ACTIONS IN THE WEST The growing intensity of tho military activity in tho Balkans has momentarily diverted interest from the main theatres of the war. Tlio Bulgar-Germano-Turco offensive lias developed, and heavy fighting lias occurred at various points along tho lino. Tlio enemy's objective is said to bo still obscure, but his activity has been deduced as an attempt to overawe tlio Greeks and so sway tho elections in favour of the Teutonic Allies. The Greek Press comments are evidence of the fact that the issue means much to tho Greeks. There are no material developments on the Western front, the fighting being more or less of a local character. On tho Eastern front tho Russians on the Stochod and in tho Carpathians have mado further progress. Important mountain positions have been captured in the vicinity of the Jablonitza Pass. There is an apparent lull in tho Italian theatro. The Austrians are making an artillery attack on the Trentino, while the Italians are consolidating their newly-won positions on the Isonzo front.
