The Hon. A. T. Maginnitv, M.L.C., arrived from Nelson by the Pateena last evening for tlio purpose of attending the Parliamentary' Committee set up in regard to the furnishing of the new Parliamentary Buildings. Hie committee will meet this.morning at 11 o'clock. On Saturday, at the Auckland Supremo Court, Mr. 3?. G. Hall-Jones, B.A'., was, on the motion of Mr. F. E. Sacra, admitted as a barrister by Judge Copper. Sir. Shera mentioned that Mr. Hall-Jones had just recently returned from active service at the front, after having joined the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, having been' wounded at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. Mr. HallJones was among the first NewZea"anders to land at Anzac on April 25, 1915. Mr. James. M'Menamen, of Te Kamaru Station, Makara, returned from a visit to Vancouver by the Makura. s A private cablegram received in Wei; liugton states that Lce.-Corpl. C. S. Masters, who was reported wounded, is now in the No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, Hants, and is progressing favourably. Sergt. W. N. Sievers, son of Mr. G. Sievers, of Solway, Masterton, who is on service in France, has been promoted to {Tie rank of lieutenant. Private Harold Gordon Glozicr, D Company, Nineteenth. Reinforcements, died at 9.30 p.m. on Sunday in Featherston Military Hospital, the cause of death being cardiac failure, following, pneumonia. Pte.- Glozier's next-of-kin is Mrs. M. Glozior, Awarua Plains, Southland. Cable advice has been received from France that Sergt. E. R. V. Petrie, of Wellington, has been promote! lieutenant in the Ist Otago Infantry Battalion. Professor MacMillan Brown, who has recently been engaged in research work in tfTo Ellice and Gilbert Groups, left Wellington for Christchurch lust evoning. News received in AVellington states that Sub-Lieutenant Athol Scales, o'dcst son of Mr. G. H. Scales, has been succossful in his naval examinations and lias been promoted lieutenant on the Dreadnought B.arliam. _ Lieutenant Scales, who 'is twenty-six years of age, has been in the Navy only three months. Mr. Frederick Georgo Smith a very old and highly-esteemed resident of Lower Hutt, died ifiere on Sunday night, at the age of eighty-two years. Tlie late Mr. Smith arrived in Wellington with .his wife and. family in the sliip La Hogue in 1874. Ever since that time hj had resided in Wellington, with the exception of a short period when be visited Sydney. The lato Mr. Smith settled in Newtown when tliero wero only some eight residents there, and built ouo of the first houses in tbe locality. _ For about tliirty-five years ho was in the employ of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co. as a moulder, wlien tiie firm's foundry was on 'the present sito of Messrs. Levin and Company's warehouse. Ho loaves a wife, four daughters, and three sons, the latter being Messrs. F. W. Smith (Dannevirko), Mark Smith (Wellington), and Thomas Smith (Oamaru). Tlie daughters are Mrs. C. Palmer, of KilEirnio; Mrs. Timmins, of Melrose ; Mrs. J. Dawn, of Epuni Hamlet; and Tars. D'Ath, of Auckland. Mr. J. M. Thornley lias boon appointed "Wellington manager' for Messrs. S. Kirkpatrick and Co., Ltd. Mr. Thornley was selected out of 126 applicants for tlio position, and he will take up his duties on September 1. M. limilo Bitcker, of Surabaya, Java, who brought tbe Russian musicians, Alfred Mirovitcli and Michael Piastre, to Australia, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. Charles Prince, who went into camp yesterday, was presented by tlie accountants' branch of tho Wellington Harbour Board, on Saturday, with a wristlet watch. Mr. J. E. Gamble made the presentation on behalf of the staff. Mr. Priuco is tlio eighteenth membor of tlio office staff to enlist for active servico, making a total of about 50 ner cent, enlisted.
