A Russian official communique states: "We capturcd Chcrvische Farm . and several heights oil the Stochod. There was stubborn fighting for Toboly, which changed hands several times, hut remains in our possession. Wo captured the heights westward of Jablonitza and Voronka, and repulsed attacks against our heights north of Kirlibaha." . ' STORY OF A BRILLIANT ATTACK (Rec. August 21, 7 p.m.) Petrograd, August 21. The correspondent of the journal "Russkoe Blovo," describing the Russian capture of tho Eliadki ZebToff position, 6ays: "It was the most brilliant in tho history of the war. The enemy's trenches, extending along low hills between the Sereth and tho Tarnopol-Lemborg railway, were plated with iron like knight armour, with massive earthern parapets, and covered with a solid layer of ferro-concrete. The position was protected on the left flank by a chain of roedy lakes and marshes. Tho Russians surprised the enemy in a night attack whore the swamps were the least penetrable, forking their way through the reed beds in complete darkness, floundering in the mud, and jumping from tuft to tuft. Suddenly a searchlight and star shells lit tho scene, and shrapnel and machine-guns swept tho entire swamp. Tho attackers were hidden, but the swaying rushes disclosed their movements to the gunners. The Russians pressed on in spite of their hoavy losses, formed groups on firm "round before dawn, and charged the Austro-German lines with tho bayonet m the first light of the morning. A stubborn fight ensued. The enemy brought up all his available reinforcements, but nothing checked tho Russian impetus. Two German regiments were practically exterminated. The Russians' victory, combined with General Lotchitsky's advance from Stanislau, compelled General Bothmer to fall back/on the Zlota, Lipaline." GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. Amsterdam] August 20. A German official comrauniquo states: "Field-Marshal von Hindenburg frustrated Russian attempts to cross the Beresina (south-east of Dvinsk). Wo are still engaged with the Russians on the Stochod. We ejected the Russians from advanced trenches eastward of Kisielin (twenty miles east of VladimirVolinsid). There is no change northward of tho Carpathians. The Archduke Charles captured the Creta height, southward of Zabie, and repulsed strong counter-attacks at Magura." J SURPRISING VITALITY OF THE RUSSIAN BEAR ' ("The Times.") . * London, August 20. "The Times" correspondent at Amsterdam states that Prince HohenlolieSehillingsfurst, speaking in Berlin on tho Emperor Francis Joseph's birthday, said that the Austro-German successes in 191-5 had justified the belief that tho war was endin". But while they were eagerly watching the Western offensive a new thundercloud had burst with unforeseen violence in tho East. Tho Russian bear, anything but slaughtered, wae pouring out an inexhaustible torrent of men equipped with the most modem weapons. Nevertheless he was reassured in his belief in the ultimato victory of Austria and Germany.
