CHINESE PREMISES BALDED, v Mr: L. G. Reid, S.M., occupied the Bench at the Magistrate's Court' on Saturday. . _ Surprise .visits had been paid by a ' squad of police to Chinese premises situated in Haining and To-ranaki Streets on Friday evening, and the result was that thirteen Chinese and Europeans appeared at Court to answer various charges.' George Goe,'George Wong, Sue Sin Siring, and Ah Kee were each, charged with being the occupiers of gaming-houses and commencing games of chance, while Wall Lee, .Wong You, and Ah Wong were charged with being 'found in common gaminghouses'. The premises are situated at 3 Haining Street, 41 Haining Street, 143 Taranaki Street, arid 6 Haining Street. On the application of Inspector Hendrey, a remand was granted till August 24. Mr. O'Leary, who appeared for accused, asked for bail, and this was granted in the sum of £100 in each case. The Europeans, who were charged with being in common gaming-houses, are r Abraham Frederick Jones, Leonard. Jones, John Anderson, Joseph Harris, Walter Stearnian, and Percy Miniiie. Each pleaded guilty, and a fine of £1 with costs was imposed in each case. Default was fixed at three days' im-. prisonment. ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTERING. Six additional charges of breaking and entering were preferred against a young man named Edward Foreman, making seven charges so far. Foreman is awaiting a retrial at the Supreme Court on a charge of indecent assault. Details of the seven breaking and entering charges are as follow:—(1) On July 7, 1916, at Kilhirnie, did break and enter the dwellinghouse of Georgina Edwards and steal jewellery to the value of £7; (2) on July 15, 1916, at Kilhirnie, did break'and enter the dwellinghouse of Charles Walter Cooper and steal jewellerv to the value of £27 155.; (3) on July 4, 1916; at Hataitai, did break and enter the dwellinghouse of Lydia Pearson Gibson and steal jewellery 'to"the total value of £75 os., and os. in money; (4) on July 15, 1916, did break a.iid enter the dwellinghouse of Essie Helen Hohnwood and steal jewellerv to the value of £70; (5) on March 25, 1916, did .break and enter the dwelling of Ray Edgar; 66 Oriental Bay, and steal jewellery to the total value of £84; (6) on or about the month of May, 1916, at Wellington, did steal 62 diamonds and three sapphires, of the total yaluo of £50, from some person or persons unknown; (7) oh July 7, 1916, at Wellington, did break ami enter the house of Sydney Johnson and steal jewellery to the value of £97 ss. Inspector Hendrey, in applying for bail for accused, in the absence of Mr. 'J-. 31. Wilford, his solicitor, pointed out that the stolon jewellery totalled over £400 in value. His.-Worship granted bail in accused's own bond of £250 and one surety of £250. - ' OTHER CASES. For insobriety, William Herbert Vincent was fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was passed on Phillis Ferraro, who was charged with being an incorrigible rogue in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. S.'io had been previously convicted for being an idle and disorderly person.
