LIFE IN THE TRENCHES
GAS MASKS FOR HORSES
Some, interesting details of life in the trenches aro contained in a letter received from Private K. M'Dormott, formerly on the staff of the Bank of , New Zealand, Cambridge. He writes that the graves of New Zoalanders arc cared for_ in France as they were iu I'lgypt, ail being marked with crosses and tho namo and number of the one whose remains aro interred therein. An interesting fact mentioned is that the horses, as well as' the men, are provided with gas holmets, and that when Jho Germans aro using gas all kinds of whistles and syrens are sounded to give warning. He further states that the troops have excellent baths in a brewery they now occupy, the vats being largo enough to swim in, and heated by hot-water pipes. Tho luxury of having a bath when they come from tho trenches, and finding clean clothes awaiting them is one that strongly appeals to tho' men, and appreciation does not express half of what tlfe.y feel. Tho writer is well, and says ho can sleep .through all the noise and turmoil of a bombardment when II comes to his turn to take a spell.
