THE CUNARD AND CANADIAN NORTHERN
LOOKING TO THE PACIFIC. .The following offioial announcement is issued respecting the agreement which has been made by the Cunard Company to -purchase- tho ships and Business.of the Canadian Northern Bailway Company:— . .' "An agreement of great importance to the development of trade and passenger traffic with Canada has been concluded between the Canadian Northern Railway and tho Cunard Steamship Company. The agreement provides for vory close working arrangements betweon the two parties. The' Cunard Company will take over the steamers owned and controlled by, the Canadian Northern Railway which v.ero running before the war from Avonmouth and Rotterdam, and will maintain sorvicos between Canada and ports in tho United Kuigdom and on the Continent. 'TTie Canadian Northern' Railway, throughout the vast territory covered by its railway lines from the Atlantic to tho_ Pacific coast, will direct its efforts in favour of tho. Cunard Line, while the Cunard Line will in the same way work in favour of the Canadian Northern Railway. The various Canadian services of the Cunard Line and the Canadian Northern Railway system will thus in effect becomo a single transportation unit between Fhiropo and 1 tho Dominion of Canada. Steamship services on the Pacific Ocean are also in contemplation. The agreement becomes operative at once, but its full effect will not be scon until after tho conclusion of the war." Apart from its indication of the farreaching character of tho new agreement, the most interesting feature of the official announcement is that the Cunard flag may be expected to appear on the Pacific Ocean. :
