Mr-Philip Gibbs, the war correspondent, says: While Picardy is Absorb- ' ing. attention, our northern line is not having a quiet time. During the last six weeks there has hardly been a single might without raiding affairs. Round Ypres, Hohenzollem Redoubt, Cfivenchy, and'Neuve Chapella brief'' but bloody visits have-been paid towards the enemy... Artillery on both.' sides have been'lfccclerated at some parts, especially opposing the Kern-, iriel district, held-by -the Canadians. '- ■ 'The. enemy seems to havowithdra.wn his heavy guns and replaced them with quick-firing mortars, which hammered our. trenches' with fiery rage, but our mortars are heavier, and immediately retaliated. .The enemy's longrange guns- also shelled, villages far behind pur lines, killing civilian's. Th&-enemy must have suffered heavily in this northern sector, for our artillery-daily keeps up a steady and continuous fire, smashing entanglements and laying parapets flat. ■ It has been six weeks of bombardment, raids, and poison-gas attacks. The enemy has had the worst of it, though •it has-been pretty bad for us, too. Tho Australians and Canadian's share the raids with, the Britishers.
