Another smart passago has been registered by the Wiinmera, which arrived, at Wellington from Mebourne direct at 5.20 a.m. yesterday. The vessel left the Victorian port at .1.55 p.m. on Saturday last, and averaged 13.7 knots per hour on the run across. Good weather was ex- l perienced. Transhipments ex tho follow- j ing vessels were brought across by the I Wimmera:—Mooltnn, Loongana, llotoma- j hana, Winfield, Harold, Houtman, Waga I Maru, and Obra. Hi* Wimmera will 8 leave Wellington for Melbourne, via south- I crn ports, to-morrow. i BARQUE MANUREWA' ARRIVES. j After a remarkably good trip, except a for the last few days, the barque Maim- I rewa. arrived in port yesterday afternoon, and berthed at the Railway Whnr(. She left Grafton. Clarence River (N.S.W.) on August 5, with a full load of hardwood, mostly for Wellington, and a small amount for Wanganui. The local consignment of timber is for the Railway Department, the Pablic Works Department, and the Harbour Board. .On Saturday—seven days out—Cape Farewell was sighted, and the vessel expected to arrive in port on Sunday. For four days, however, variable winds blew, and she was kept in Cook Strait until finally yesterday morning she got near enough to signal for a tug and a pilot. The vessel will discharge her Wellington cargo, and proceed to Wanganui probably at the end of next week to finish unloading, after which she will most likely pick up a pine cargo, and Teturn to Australia. LEITRIM AT WHANG AJOX The Union Company's new steamer Leitrim arrived at WhangaTei yesterday morning from Sydney. She is running under the auspices of the F. and S. Line, and will load in the north for Home. The Leitrim is described as an exceptionally fine vessel of 9540 tons gross register. She is a steamer of the fiamo typo as the new Devon and Cumberland, and was built at Middlesbrough-on-Tees, to the order of the Union Steam Shin Company. The vessel will not visit Wellington this trip. ' MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. .T, W. Norrie, sccond officer of the | Wimmera, who has been on holiday leave, j ho/S rejoined his ship. a Mr. D. Kerr, assistant purser of tho 6 Wimmera, is at present spending a holl- B day in Adelaide, and his place has been & taken by Mr. W/Mason. J Mr. O. M. Bothamley, late of Messrs. I Leviu and Co., has accepted an appoint- flmcnt with Messrs. Burns, Philp, and Co'.'s I Wellington office. jj Mr. T. A. Morgan, a marine engineer j In the service of the Indian Government, g is at present oil a visit to New Zealand. L He will leave for Englaud by the Rotorua, \ Mr. A, E. Young, late second officer of * the Corinna, arrived in Wellington by tho Mararoa yesterday morning. Mr. A. Henry, chief officer of the Nlkau, is confined to his home at Nelson, owing " to a, slight illness. Mr. R. Woolf Is at present acting-mate of the vessel. Latest advices from- Dunedin were to the effect that the schooner Omega was still detained owing to a shortage of hands. The Te Anau is expected, to leave Timaru to-day with southern produce for' Auckland. The Mapourika arrived at GreymoiHh from Wellington, via,. way ports,. at 3.35 a.m. yesterday, and was to have left on the return trip at 10 p.m. Tho first of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha "fleet to visit these waters—the Akita Maru—was expected to leave Japan about the middle of this for Wellington direct. She is due about a month later, and will leave Wellington about September 23 for Port Pirie and Sydney. This week the Union Company's steamer Rakanoa is to load at Newcastle for Auckland. Tho Kaitangata Is at present loading timbor at Mercury 'Bay for Sydney. Before leaving New Zealand finally she.will proceed to Opua to fill up. A shortage of seamen was responsible for delaying the departure of the Polierua for Greymouth till nearly midnight on.- Wednesday. After a stay of many years at Wellington, the Blackball Coal Company's old * hulk Elinor Vernon 'will leave in a few weeks' time for Auckland. Tho Elinor Vernon was onco an American threemasted barque, trading between this country and the United States. She was built in 1886, and in 1901 Messrs. John | Mills and Co., of Dunedin, secured her and B transferred her into a hulk. The Melbourne, which is at present discharging Newcastle coal at 'Lyttelton. will subsequently proceed to North Auckland ports to load timber for Australia- t On account of her late arrival here from southern ports yesterday the Tarawera did not get away for tho north till a lato hour last night. If the'steamer Caciaue arrives in oort from New York in time the Stormbird j will probably take some of her Amorican cargo to Wanganui on Monday. The trim little barquentine Wanganui arrived at' Auckland on Tuesday evening from Sydney, after a crcditable passage . of eleven days. The vessel left Sydney | at 4 p.m. on August 4, and encountered strong south-west winds and high seas throughout tho voyage. From the time the Wanganui cleared Sydney Heads until sho rounded Cape Maria van Diemen, lier j decks wero continuously awash, but the I littio vessel proved herself a good sea craft, and came along before the strong winds at' a fair speed. The Wanganui was formerly known as the Carle, and was stranded on the beach near the Wanganui River' Bar' about four years e ago. She was subsequently refloated, and I was later purchased by Messrs. H. Bleakley amt Co., of Sydney. The Wanganui | has been regularly employed in tho inter- j colonial • trade, carrying timber from Wanganui to Sydney, and returning to i tho river port with coal from Newcastle. The vessel will load a part cargo of timber at Auckland, and tho balance at Whangaroa, for Sydney.
