ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was held last evening, _ tho Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump) presiding. The following were also present: Councillors J. G. Smith, AY. Appleton, A. 1?. Budd, J. C. Gardner, and L. A. Brown.
On the recommendation of the engineer (Mr. R. S. Rounthwaite) it was decided to accedo to the request of the ratepayers iu York Avenue for extra lighting facilities. In Tegard to the proposed widening of the main road near Ngaio store, the engineer reported that ho did not think that any material advantage would be gained by setting back the fenco and excavating the embankment. To obtain any additional width would mean a curtailment in tho width of Abbott Road, which, in his opinion, is quite narrow enough. A letter was received from tho chairman of the Recruiting Board (tho Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime .Minister), setting forth the proposed , methods which will he' adopted in connection with the Dew recruiting scheme under the Military Service Act. _ On the motion of Councillor Smith it was decided to reply to tho effect tlut the council would give every assistance possible. The Minister of Finance telegraphed, asking tho council to hold a public meeting in the borough' for tho purpose of placing before ratepayers and the public proposals in connection with the war loan. On account of the late receipt of the message, however, it was dccided to reply, stating that it had been found impossible to comply with the'' request, but that tho borough would co-operate with tho City Council iu the matter.
