THE COBBLER MASCOT
SIXTEENTHS' APPRECIATION.
When tho Sixteenth Reinforcements marched from Featherston _to Trentham their mascot, "The Little Cobbler". (Mr. F. V. Rutherford), who is well on in years, accompanied them on their record journoy. He was exceedingly popular, with tho men, and as a token of the esteem in which lie is held by them, tho Sixteenths have presented him with a cheque and a silver watch. Tho watch is inscribed as follows:—"Presented to Mr. F. V. Rutherford by th& Sixteenth Reinforcements in recognition of a splendid performance on August 6, 1916." Accompanying the presents wa6 the following testimonial:—"The officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the Sixteenth Reinforcement, who marched over tho Rinuitakas from Featherston to the Trentham Camp on Sunday, August 6, 1916, ask you to accept the gift v.e send with this letter as a memento of the march and a' recognition of your grit and endurance. "Throughout a long day jour fine spirit mid example spread its cheery influence throughout tlio ranks. "Tho younger men who marohed behind you wish that you could hearten all their marches. Tliey will remember you when the day is long, and hope they will bring; no discredit ,on tho flag you carried so well. "(Signed) H. Vv. King, Capt., O.C. A Company; J. L. Ilaseklean, Captain, O.C.
