PARCELS AND PUDDINGS FOR SOLDIERS

| At' a meeting of the Nursing and i Ambulance Divisions (men's and women's branches) of the St. John. Ambulance Brigade Overseas, which was held in St. John's Schoolroom last evening, a most intoresting lecturo-was given by Colonel Esson. Among other things that tho speaker emphasised in the course of his talk was the way in which tho mon appreciated the Christmas puddings which were sent to them last year,-and indeed all the gifts that were sent, to them, as the work of tho .women of New Zealand. Much as he enjoyed his own Christmas pudding when he was among tlieni, it was oven a greater pleasure co him to see their enjoyment. Parcels, he further told his hearers, w-ould always be the better for having sweets among tho gifts, which were included as tho men had developed' a great liking for them. Ho did not think it was good policy to send money, as the men were provided with everything they wanted. While they were in hospital, if there were anything needed, and they had no money, all they had to" do. was to sign an order and afterwards, when they were out of hospital, the money would be deducted from-their pay. Tho Mayoress, Mrs. J. I'. Luke, who occupied the chair, also spoko at the conclusion of Colonel Esson's address, and said that the Mayoress's Countess of Liverpool Fund had been originally instituted, for the purpose of supplying our soldiers with little comforts and luxuries that were not included in the Government equipment* By showing the men that they.were thought of and worked for by tile women they left behind,'much was dono to keep up their spirits, and consequently their health.
