GRAND NATIONAL MEETING STEEPLECHASE WON BY WAIMAI CHERRY BLOSSOM'S CUP (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) ' Christchurch, August 15. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting opened to-day in fine but dull weather. There was a large attendance, including His Excellency the Governor and suite. The course was in good order. The totalisator handled .£16,366, against .&t3,396 on the opening day last year.
In tho Tally Ho Plate, which opened the programme, there were only three runners, and the public ■ laid odds on Miss N. Armstrong's KorangL who is trained by J. M. Cameron. The other runners wero Soiling Tide and Darda-' nelles, and the latter failed to get. round, while Rolling Tide was in front throughout, and jumping cleanly, he won by a couple of furlongs, j The favourite was nearly down at the first fence, and from thonco on ho jumped with - no confidence. Dardanelles stopped , at the. •6od-wa.il, and after half a dozen attempts to get it his rider brought him back to the paddock.
A very good field of hunters contested the Hunters' Hurdles. Prenez Garde went off with the lead, but he fenced badly,'and after half a mile gave way to Sabrenui, Compulsion, and Turenou. This was the order into the straight, where Cron Park ran into second place. Once over the last" fence tho leaders were very hard ridden, but in a good finish Sabrenui held his own, and won by a length. Bill Terry was close up, and then, came Turehana and Compulsion.
There were only five runners in tho Trial Hurdles. Golden March was a good, favourite, but he shaped badly, and failed to gain a place. The raco was run at" a slow pace, and Kooya, who jumped badly, was enabled to get the others' measure by the poor pace set. Golden March led for a mile, when Czaronus took charge, but in the long run between the last two fences, the Napier mare easily got in front. She peaked at the last fence, but had too big an advantage for it to make much difference. Her form does not suggest her a likely National winner, though it must bo admitted-that when with her field to-day she jumped better than when alone.
The market in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap was a wide one, several of tho runners boing heavily supported; At tho start Master Regal and Tenacious led Pursefiller and St. Blmn, with Sam Pan and To Onga whipping the field, a position they, occupied throughout the race. Down the back Art became prominent, but the leading positions were unchanged. Master Regal led into tho straight, where Tenacious and St. Elmn fell away, and Crib moved up. Art joined Master Regal at the distance, and in a very close finish the Riccartontrained- animal won by a head.; Crib, who camo from a very long way imcX, was third, Tararu Jack fourth, and Marconi fifth. Art is not in the National Hurdles, but the other horses mention T ed lost no friends by their displays, particularly Crib The 19 acceptors all paraded for the National Steeples. It was a record field, and what was wanting in quality was made up in quantity. Of the field, nine failed to get round, and the raco wis full of escitement the whole way. Idealism, tho favourite, got round safely, but though he made a good showing he could not do better than finish fourth. All got over the initial obstacle well, and passing the stand Queen's Post was showing out with New I'ork. At the double I'agot and Recharge lost their riders, and Cutts's big gorso brought down Queen's Post and New York, who were in front. Idealism and Waimai wero now in charge. At the sod wall Ngatoa, Bransfield, and Bravest came down, and Braeburn ran off at the post-aud-rails. Waimai was now showing the way to Idealiinn and Heatherlea, with the field strung out; The leader "Was jumping poifectly, and so wero Idealism and Black Sea" who calno next. Down tho back the last time It looked any odds on Waimai bar an accident. With six furlongs to go Black &'ea joined Idealism, and Merry Lad also became prominent. The winner never Isalfed like getting beaten, and he won' decisively from Merry, Lad, who displaced Black Sea in the run home. The favourite was fourth, and then came Lady Bibbero, Wirokiuo, The Brewer, Heatherlea, Naupnta. The first "ravounto to materialise during the afternoon was the Aucklander, Gluepot, who prevailed in tho Eniield Steeples. Ho won on his merits aiter giving a splendid exhibition of jumping, Critic, Oratonu, and lterekohu were leading, for a mile, when Oratonu went to th« front, but at the Kennels double the favourite took charge, and from that point was not troubled. lkowai put in a run in the straight, and got secoud place, svhile Nita also finished well, a head in front of Oratonu. Caseshot, Critic, and Weilwood fell. '*-■
Plying Start, who gave way to San Sebastian, Sir Agues, who broke down, Aurore, and Twelfth Night were tho withdrawals from the Cup Held. In the cage noth'ing stripped better than Gold Soult and Cherry Blossom, and tho pair, wfch Multifual, moved brilliantly in their preliminaries. At the start Gold Soult was chopped out, and the first to brcome •prominent was Heeltap, but at tho end of a furlong ,Cherry Blossom was clear of the field, with Icilma, Glenroy, and George next.. Eoundin" the bend the leader put a break on the field, mid entered the straight six lengths clear o£ UenT'gt. K funonfj from home tho latter was in trouble, and Sedd el Bahr and Seadown moved up on the fenco, Heeltap taking second place. In the run home nothing could make .an impression on tho waro, wlio won by fullv six; lengths, whiilo Heeltap beat Slid el Bahr by a neck. Then came Seadown, Jeannot, and Gold Soult in that order.... Tho concluding event was contested by a very largo field. War Tax was a good favourite, but tho winner turned up in the Varco gelding Varnish, who got up and beat the favourite, and gave one of the biggest returns of tho year.
