BATTLE INCIDENTS ON THE SOMME

. London, August 14. Corporal Jacka, V.C., of Victoria, las earned further honours. He is now in hospital in London, with eight separate wounds. Hi 6 comrades declare that he-deserves another Victoria Cross. Dnrrug the fierce, fighting at Pozieres tho Australians took tho first German • position, and regardless of the danger from their - own artillery, penetrated the second line, in the face cf the hottest fire. The Germans counter-attack-ed, refilling trenches ou . either side, and isolated Jacka and a party of fifty bombers. They had no bombs, and were oompelled to surrender. Jacka and six others, who. crouched in a dugout, saw ■ the hopelessness of the •situation.. Then they noticed ; some':Australian_ supports starting out. Jacka, unhesitatingly called out to his six comrades, who advanced upon the surprised Germanß with the bayonet, and shouting. The bluff succeeded. The Germans, numbering nearly two hundred, showed no resistance; some escaped, the others surrendered. The Australians marched ill triumph back with the prisoners. Theii comrades, seeing the success of tha ruse, welcomed them with reusing cheers.
