HIGH PRAISE FOR ANZAC HORSEMEN
THE BATTLE OF EL ROMANI BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SURPASSED Australian-New Zealand Oable Association. Cairo, August 14. Mr. W. T. Masse.v, the British war correspondent,'' writing on Saturday, says:—Of the threo Turkish infantry attacks, the third was tlie most fc-in.id-able; liut owing to the heavy shrapnel and the steady disciplined fire of tho Anzacs, tlio Turks ercpt .way in the moonlight, leaving numerous dead. There is no doubt that tho original estimates that tho IXirks lost a third of their effectives aro now largoly exceeded, The enemy's rapid retreat prevented the employment of a substantial portion of our infantry, but ho was obliged to fight continuously for oight days. This is tho finest tribute tliat can be paid to tlie Anzacmounted men, who bore the heat and burden of eight days of incessant fighting_ after a fortnight of constant engagements with the enemy's outposts. It is the unanimous opinion that no troops in tho world could have fought letter tban the Anzacs. Their training in this barren country enabled them to endure fa.tigue that would have overwhelmed most men. . No troops could liavo surpassed their brilliant achievement, ■which maao El Bomani one of the most import-ant victories of the war. They bore the entire weight of tlio enomy attacks from the moment when tho infantry were compelled to abandon;the pursuit almost to the end of the struggle. The Turks were always in superior numbers ; but the Anzacs' initiative ability was more than a mateh for large battalions.
