MR. HUGHES'S WAR PREDICTIONS
HOPEFUL, BUT CAUTIOUS "WE MUST POUR MORE MEN INTO THE FIELD" Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. Melbourne, August 15. Speaking- at a reception, Mr. W. M. Hughes (" le Federal Prime Minister) said:—"We have ono hundred thousand troops on the Western front. Although tho Allies' recent success is a sign that the tide has turned, nothing Justifies tho belief that a decisive victory is at hand. It is believed that a decisive victory for the enemy is impossible, but that fact does not necessarily ensure that victory will Test with us. After two years of war, Germany's great strength is not sap. pedj and the end will not be in sight until Germany has been driven; out of France, Belgium, and Russia. Wo must cdnquer, yet we cannot prolong the war indefinitely. Germany is bleeding to death, but so are the Allies. Tho only way to secure victory is to pour more men into the field. If Germany is not beaten decisively, those responsible for tho crimes she has committed cannot be punished as outraged civilisation demands." Mr. Hughes concluded that our duty was clear. Whatever was necessary would be done by tho people of Australia, and he would' do his duty no matter whom lie pleased or displeased.- — i
