HOSTILE CROWD AT A MEETING
Australian-New: Zealand Cable Association. (Rec. August 14, 0.10 a.m.)
Sydney, August 13. Tho country is still anxiously waiting for Mr. Hughes to break silence regarding the conscription question. In view of this, and the hostility displayed at previous demonstrations, the announcement of a Political Labour League anticonscription meeting drew a crowd in the vicinity of a 'hundred thousand to the Domain. A strong police force was in attendance, and, despite being frequently '"counted out," tho speakers persisted. The crowd becoming restive, the police had increasing difficulty in stemming the pressure towards the platform. The proceedings were rather hurriedly terminated by the putting of a resolution expressing hostility to the introduction of compulsion in tho Commonwealth. It was declared carried, though a very small section in the vicinity of the speakers voted. Tho police ousted counter-demonstrators, who. then mounted the platform. The crowd quietly dispersed.
