WORK OF THE AUSTRALIANS

GENERAL BIRDWOOD'S PRAISE Auatralian-Now Zealand Cable Association. (Rce. August 13, 5.5 p.m.) London, August 12. General Birdwood, writing to tho Commissioner of tho Australian Comforts Fund, and appreciating the work, adds: "Our boys are going through a lot of terribly hard fighting. During tho last three weeks they have dono simply magnificently. No words can half express my feelings on their courage and determination in sticking it out. We not only captured Pozieres, but tho much moro difficult high ground abovo and beyond. I am sorry to say our casualties, as was inevitable, were heavy, not in taking trenches, but iu holding them afterwards, because it is extremely difficult to provide cover against heavy guns."
