CHESS NOTES

WELLINGTON SOOTH V. NGAIO

The first of this year's "home and home I .' matches between the Wellington South and Ngaio Clubs was played at Ngaio on Monday evening, wnen there was a very satisfactory attendance considering the inclement weather. A hearty wclcome was extended by Mr. A. B. Topp, the president of the local club, and happily acknowledged by Mr. W. Armstrong, the Wellington South president. The honours of the evening fell to the visiting team, who won handsomely, the score being as follows :—

Wellington South. —D. Purclias, 1; W. J. Harpa', 1; W. Armstrong, 0; A.Claik, -i; E. J. J'alkiner, 1; W. ■ Berry, 1; H. J. Thompson, 1; W; B. P. Perrott, 1; F. Laugnton, 1; total, Ti. Ngaio.—\Y. Carman, 0; A. B. 'i'opp, U; D. Wild, 1; Ed. Hicks, V; J. Lindsay, 0; E. E. Hicks, 0; P. Banks, 0; L. A. Browne, 0; A. S. Green, 0; total, I}. LOCAL TOURNAMENTS. . Each ol" the four local clubs has an annual handicap tournament in full swing. There has been some very interesting play in these contests, several of the leaders having tasted defeat since our progress report of a fortnight ago. The position of the leaders in the various clubs is now as follows: — Wellington Club.

Banks in 6 i 2 j,; Browne IV 7 o | Hicks, E. E. ... II 6* 41 1 \ Tucker V oh -J Hicks, Ed .11 5.0 2 | From the foregoing figures it will be a ficen that close finishes are assured in » every instance. The Ngaio Club's an-: ■ nual distribution of prizes is to take ])lace in about a-.- month's time, an at- | tractive programme being arranged for jjj tho occasion. . CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. J Tlie two outstanding games of the match between the abovo clubs have j been adjudicated on by Messrs. Mason, | Barnes, and Still, the Wellington mem- j bers of the N.Z. Adjudication Board. | They award a draw at Board 9 and a | win to the Canterbury player at Board u 12. The final score is, therefore: \ Otago, 6 wins; Canterbury, 2 wins; s and 4 games drawn. Otago's win is 6 the more meritorious, as they were t minus the services of three of their ! ox-champions. The Canterbury team, on the other hand, was the same as g that which tied with Wellington in the 5 match played two months earlier. j OTAGO V. WELLINGTON. | Mr. L. D. Coombs, the president of | the Otago Chess Club, is at present in j Wellington on a short busfness visit. | On Saturday evening he met'the Wei- g lington Club's Committee, with a view | to arranging a telegraphic match be- J tween the two clubs. It is proposed ( to have, 14 players aside, and to hold s the contest on September 9 and 16. j The only difficulty is that the Otago Club has very few clocks, and. the Wei- | lington Club is not keen on dispensing i with clocks. The clubs will probably 5 meet each other half-way by using g clocks at the first seven or eight boards- jj only. It is exactly seven years since ; these clubs last met, the match m k August, 1009, ending in favour of the 8 local club by 7 points to 5. The "bopt' will probably be on the other leg" this \ time, seeing that Otago lias handsome- < ly won its two last matches versus Can- j t'erburv, while Wellington has twice j failed to beat Canterbury. j
