LAPSE OF A MOTOR-DRIVER

Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. •William Lynch, lor drunkenness, was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, Edward Cruickslianks, a motor driver, pleaded guilty to ,tho tlieft o't 355., the property of James Purely. The accused married man with two children, and was never previously convicted of any offence. The Magistrate said ho would give him a chance, .ind fined liim. 405.,. the alternative being 14 days' imprisonment. Accused was allowed seven days in which to pay tho fine: \ • James M'Guire was charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £7, the property of Magnus, Sanderson and Co. The accused pleaded guilty, and as he had a previous conviction he was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Robert Patterson was charged, with supplying intoxicating liquor, to a soldior in uniform for consumption elsewhere than where it was sold. Accused was convicted and fined £5, with the option of one month's imprisonment. Stella Taylor pleaded guilty to •using obscene language in Tory Place, 'file accused had 70 previous convictions against her. She was fined 405., in default 14 days, and was given seven days in which to find the money. A'CANCELLED POSTAGE STAMP. Emily Mary.Allaii,".for.whom Mr. R. Kennedy appeared, was charged with fraudulently fixing upon a letter n stamp alleged to have been removed from some other postal packet. Several postal officials gave evidence for the prosecution, including Mr. A. P. Drydon, Chief Postmaster at Wellington, who stated that he examined the stamp in question with a powerful magnifying glass, mid made other investigations, and he came to. the conclusion that it bad been previously cancelled. Miss Allan, in her evidence, said that Miss Myers, who was going on a visit to Rotorua, left her four stamps, •with instructions to write every week and let her know the state of health of lier (Miss Myers's) parents. She wrote three letters, and used the stamps left with her. She did not affix a cancelled. stamp to any of the letters, and she could not see how she could have accidentally or hy an oversight have used a defaced stamp on the letter. - Tim Magistrate said there was no doubt the letter was posted by Miss Allan, and that the stamp affixed to the letter ivas placed .there hy her. But it was not proved that r,he fraudulently made use of the cancelled stamp, and therefore he dismissed the case. BY-LAW CASES. Charles Physick, charged with leaving a baker's cart in the street unattended. and also with finding a horse hy other means than with a nose-hag, was iiiinrl. ss. on each charge. Walter Baldwin, for riding a bicycle in Courtenay Place without a- light, wjs fined 10s. Anthony Bomir, for being the owner of an unregistered dog, was fined 10s., . and costs 7s. THE SPEED LIMIT. 'William Herman, for whom Mr. H. If. p'Leiirv appeared, wa s charged with furious driving' of a motor-bar along Hunter Street, on July 12; also with refusing to stop his car when ordered to do so by a police constable; also with driving a moW-ear across the intersection of Eeatherstoii Street and l.pmbton Quay at a speed in cxcess of flint permitted by the by-laws. Mr. O'Shca, City Solicitor, conducted the prosecution. Aroused was convicted and fined 205., with os. costs.
