TEN SHILLING NOTES

TO BE ISSUED TO-DAY. During tho session of Parliament just closed authority was given to banks doing business in New Zealand, to issue 10s. notes in lieu of half sovereigns (under Section 44 of the Finance Act, 1914). The Order-in-Council in connection therewith was signed at Government House by His Excellency the Governor oil Thursday last, and was gazetted yesterday.

Acting oil the gazetted authority the Bank of New Zealand will issue the new notes in Wellington as from 10 a.m. to-da.v. Thev will also he available at all the principal branches of the bankj and most of the others today, a distribution having been made during the present month. It is understood that the other banks will follow suit.

The new note is quite unlike any other bank note in circulation. Tli'e maze of words intricately engraved as a background on most notes, is absent, and in its place is the plain businesslike announcement that the bank promises to pay the bearer tell shillings sterling. That, the name of the bank, and number, and signature is all that appears on the surface. The colour of the note is pale pink and the lettering is black. Held up to the light a white water mark, "Bank of Now Zealand," is plainly visible. The 10s. noce is deeper, but hardly so long as a £1 note, so that in counting a "wad" of notes those of the ten shilling denomination can bo readily sorted out.
