MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The City Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were present also: Councillors J". E. Fitzgerald, V. T. Hi)dretli, K. 'A. Wright, M. F. Luckie, W. If. Bennett, L. M'Kenzic, W. J. Thompson, A. H. Atkinson, J. Hutcheson, J. Godbcr, Gl. Frost, and W. H. 11.I 1 . Barber. - , ■

A proposal granting the council the right to open up and work a quarry at Kaiwari'a, with an option to purchase at the end of one year at a certain price, was not entertained.

A request for some metal for improving the footway leading from Hay Street to the Convalescent Home road was not granted, in view of the fact that the path is a private way. In consequence of complaints as to the condition of the roadway at Dixon Street, authority was granted for tho construction of a concrete base and asphalt roadway some distance up Dixon Street west, at an estimated cost of £480.

A request for tho purchase or lease of a piece of unformed road at the intersection of Melbourne Road and Queen's Drive, Island Bay, was not granted.

An applicant (or the formation of road access to the north end of Sydenham Road is to ho informed that the road cannot be formed except at' gteat expense, and owing to the larpe number of works already authorised for this year, it is regretted that lis request cannot he acceded to.

Applicants for the formation of Watt Street, Wadestown, and the, erection of a bridge across the tramway cutting, are to be informed that their request cannot bo agreed to, as there is no money available for the work. Instructions_ will, however, be given for the erection of a barricade at the end of Watt Street' to prevent accidents. A hjgh-level pathway at Upland Crescent is to be graded, 'gravelled, and protected with a hand-rail.
