PORTUGAL AND THE ALLIES
CLOSER CO-OPERATION IN THE WAR Australian-Now Zealand Oablo Association. (Rec. August 9, 8.5 p.m.) Lisbon, August 9. Tho Portuguese Finance Minister has announced that Britain is advancing loans for war purposes, repayable within two years after the war. Tho Foreign Minister states that Britain lias invited Portugal's closer co-operation in the war wTfen she is able to assist. Consultations aro in progress with that end in view.
THE SHIP SEIZURE IN PORTUGAL VESSELS BEING USED BY BRITAIN. Lisbon, 'August 8. The Government has announced that Great Britain is hiring nil the Gcrnum ships which were seized. by Portugal,. and which are not wanted by her. AS an extraordinary session of tho Congress, Senhor Costa (Minister of Finance) and Senhor Lons (Minister of Foreign Affairs) described the results of their visit to London, from which tlioy liad just returned. ■_ Tho Premier made a speech, in which he eulogised the Allies, and spoko in favour of Portuguese participation in the war. A resolution was adopted approving wliat the ■ Ministers had done m London.
