A Press Association message from Sydney last evening announced tho death of Mr. Arthur Godfrey Knight— a nopliew of Sir James Prendergast I (formerly. Chief Justice of Now Zealand) —killed in a motor accident on the Eastern Greek Bridge,, while en route to Katoomba. . The Her. Father Herring;, S.M., who has been conducting a mission in Auckland, bis returned,to Wellington. Archbishop O'Shca, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland. " ( News was received here last evening of the death in France of Sergt. Stanley Barnard, of the Australian Expo- ' ditionary Force. Sergt. Barnard, who died from'wounds sustained during the big offensive on tlio Somme, was a vouug New Zealauder, and at the outbreak of the war was a student at Victoria University College. • He was amongst tho first to volunteer for ser- . ''' ■ vice with, the Now Zealand Forces at I Samoa, aiid oil his return went to Australia, where he enlisted with tho Australian Forces. Ho vrtjnt through '' , tho hardships of the Gallipoli campaign, where ho was severely wounded in several places, with shrapnel, hut made a remarkably good recovery, and though recommended for a' trip ' home with other convalescents, considered it his. duty to go with the Anzacs to France, and to use his'own words, "see the thing through.'" He was there .again severely wounded and succumbed to li'ia injuries on July 26. He had taken up school teaching as a profession, but was an enthusiast in m'ili- ■ ; tary matters and a very fine soldier and man.' His mother, Mrs. Walker, resides at Ormondville. Mr. 0. S. Mr. Smith, 'who was 75 years, of agfo,' arrived in Auckland in 1863. During the Waikato Maori War . he- drove Messrs. Cobb and Co.'s coach to Drury, and prior to the completion of tho Kaipara railway he drove tho coach from . R-iverliead to Helensville. , , An army veteran, Mr. John Robinson, died at the Auckland Hospital on Saturday. 'Tho deceasod served in several Imperial regiments, and was a member of the 77th Regiment in India . in 1868. In that year he came to New Zealand and joined the Armed Constabulary Force'..in Wellington. Subsequently'he took part in the Maori War, under Colonel Lyons. For some time past he had been .an inmate of the Veterans' Home, and prior to that had resided at Te Karaka, Gisborne. The. deceased- was interred, with military honours, at'the Waikaraka cemetery. •'!■■'-, ' Tho late Mr.- John Hawlce, who was accidentally ;kill'ed in New Plymouth, was born in New Plymouth in 1834. : He served through tho Maori War, and was presented by Governor Browne with; a revolver,, in recognition \of" special bravery -at the. L pa on March. 17,-1860. He was also at the : battle of Waireka. After the war lie engage*! in farming at Mangorei, and except for.a short time spent at Nelson had resided in,Taranaki over since. ■■; . , A well-known figure in New Zealand : shipping circles, Mr. Arthur Lockyer Andrews, principal of the firm of;A. i L. Andrews and Co., shipping; and Customs agents, died in Auckland, on Sunday afternoon. Deceased,-'who was only .40 years of age, had a heart seizure some days ago, and sank rapidly.
