TOWN HALL SEATS
CONCERT CHAMBER BEING ■ FITTED. 1- Soma months ago a contract was Ipt by the City Council to Messrs. W. H. jE/dwards and Son, to reseat the galleries of the Town Hall and Concert ■Chamber"with upholstered' tip-up seats. The business of making these seats has been delayed a little owing to shortage of materia], which had to be imported from overseas, but that difficulty has now been removed, and the. work is proceeding apace; l A start was made yesterday by Messrs. Edwards and Co.'s staff to "erect the new.seats 'in the gallery of the Concert, Chamber, and these will be ready for the first time at tho "Jane Shore" picture entertainment this evening. A representative bJ The Dominion had an opportunity of inspecting .and testing the new seats Yesterday, and can testify to their being • nost comfortable and serviceable. The ;eat itself (18-inch in width and 20-inch irom the, centrc of the arms) is a com)ination of springs and pneumatics, vhicli-givo a cushion-like' sense - of luxury to the''sitter. It is supported jn a cast-iron standard, and covered, rith crimson "moroccoline," which provides no retreat for'dirt or vermin jf any kind. A broad, comfortablyshaped back of wood, finished bff. in moroccoline (studded with brass nails; in front, and three-ply board behind, makes'- for comfort .combined 'with strength", and the-angle of the seat and back are conducive to perfect reposo. The Concert Chamber gallery has hitherto seated 139 persons (on armless, _ hard-bottomed Austrian' chairs). It will seat 124 persons on the new upholstered seats, a trivial loss in accommodation compared with the gain In xmifort and appearanco.
